Business Continuity Institute (BCI)
Founded in 1994, The Business Continuity Institute’s mission is to promote the art and science of Business Continuity Management worldwide. The BCI promotes the highest standards of professional competence and commercial ethics in the provision, maintenance and services for Business Continuity Management (BCM). It provides an internationally recognised Certification scheme for BCM managers and practitioners and all BCI professional members have undergone a rigorous admissions process to ensure that they highly competent in their areas of expertise.
The BCI has worked in conjunction with the British Standards Institute in the establishment of the PAS56 guide for Business Continuity Management. BCI is currently involved with the development of the soon to be released British Standard for Business Continuity Management – BS 25999.
British Computer Society (BCS)
Established in 1957, BCS is the leading body for those working in IT.
With a world-wide membership now over 65,000 members in over 100 countries, BCS is the qualifying body for Chartered IT Professionals (CITP). BCS was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1984. Its objects are to promote the study and practice of computing and to advance knowledge of and education in IT for the benefit of the public. BCS is also a registered charity.
BCS is licensed by the Engineering Council to award Chartered Engineer status (CEng) and Incorporated Engineer status (IEng); and more recently by the Science Council to award Chartered Scientist status (CSci). Through our specific Professionalism in IT programme, BCS is leading and building IT professionalism.
British Standards Institute (BSI)
BSI is a group of organizations which support business improvement through best practice and international standards. BSI are the authors of the BS17799 (ISO 17799 and 27001) Information Security and PAS56 Business Continuity Management Standards. They have also joined forces with the itSMF and OGC to, to produce a BS 15000 (ISO 20000) Code of Practice on IT Service Management.
Computer Society South Africa (CSSA)
Computer Society South Africa [CSSA] focuses its activities, events and publications in five primary areas:
- ICT Policy representing industry practitioners at Government level.
- Education and training to elevate the level of ICT capability in South Africa.
- Professional development and advancement. Employers of CSSA members know that the membership vetting process is thorough and responsible.
- Community development, in terms of projects, that enhances the standards and levels of ICT for the greater good of the country.
- Transformation in ICT-E. CSSA supports the ICT Charter Working Group www.ictcharter.org.za and the Department of Trade and Industry's BEE database of empowered companies www.thedti.gov.za
With over 3000 members throughout South Africa CSSA is widely recognised as a professional body in South Africa for ICT practitioners. The CSSA is a dynamic organisation, moving with its industry and facilitating change and development for the benefit of all.
International Register of Certificated Auditors (IRCA)
IRCA is the world's original and largest international certification body for auditors of management systems. IRCA provides international recognition of competence for 14,750 auditors in 150 countries and a global benchmark for auditor training trusted by over 50,000 students each year.
IRCA provides auditors, business and industry with two main services:
- Certification of auditors of management systems.
- Approval of training organizations and certification of their auditor training courses.
IRCA offers certification programmes that recognize the competence of auditors who audit quality, environmental, occupational health and safety, software development, information security and food safety management systems.
Institute of Risk Management (IRM)
IRM is risk management's leading international professional education and training body. The Institute provides high quality education, training and professional development in risk management at a range of levels, from introductory to expert. The IRM introduced the Risk Management Standard which was published by the Institute of Risk Management (IRM), The Association of Insurance and Risk Managers (AIRMIC) and ALARM (The National Forum for Risk Management in the Public Sector) in 2002.
Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA™)
ISACA™ is an international professional, technical and educational organisation dedicated to being a single source provider for those concerned with the effective governance of information and its related technologies. With members in more than 100 countries, ISACA™ is uniquely positioned to fulfil the role of a central harmonising source of IT control practice standards the world over.
Information Systems Examinations Board (ISEB)
ISEB, is a division of the British Computer Society, was created in 1990 from the Systems Analysis Examinations Board (which was set up in 1967). ISEB administers examinations and issues certificates in a variety of subjects in the field of information systems engineering.
The aim of the Information Systems Examination Board (ISEB) is to raise the standard of competence and performance of those working in IT. It does this by offering a range of relevant industry recognised qualifications.
ISEB does not itself provide training to candidates preparing for its qualifications but, through the accreditation process, it does recognise and promote those training organisations which demonstrate the ability to teach the appropriate syllabus using competent tutors and good materials in an appropriate learning environment.

International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO)
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer of standards, including ISO 17799, ISO 27001, ISO 20000. Although ISO's principal activity is the development of technical standards, ISO standards also have important economic and social repercussions. ISO standards make a positive difference, not just to engineers and manufacturers for whom they solve basic problems in production and distribution, but to society as a whole.
IT Governance Institute (ITGI)
The ITGI, founded by ISACA™ in 1998, strives to assist enterprise leadership in ensuring long-term, sustainable enterprise success and increased shareholder value by expanding awareness of the need for and benefits of effective IT Governance. The institute develops and advances understanding of the vital link between IT and corporate governance, and offers best practice guidance on the management of IT-related risks. The ITGI’s Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT 4th Edition) is a de facto standard and benchmark for IT Governance.
IT Service Management Forum (itSMF)
The itSMF is an independent and internationally-recognised forum for IT Service Management professionals worldwide. This not-for-profit organisation is a prominent player in the on-going development and promotion of IT Service Management "best practice", standards and qualifications and has been since 1991. The itSMF provides an accessible network of industry experts, information sources and events to help you and your staff address IT service management issues and help you achieve the delivery of high quality, consistent IT service internally and externally through the adoption of "best practice".
Office of Government Commerce (OGC)
The Office of Government Commerce (OGC) is an independent office of HM Treasury, established to help Government deliver best value from its spending. The OGC works with central Government departments and other public sector organisations to ensure the achievement of six key goals:
- Delivery of value for money from third party spend;
- Delivery of projects to time, quality and cost, realising benefits;
- Getting the best from the Government's £30bn estate;
- Improving the sustainability of the Government estate and operations, including reducing carbon emissions by 12.5% by 2010-11, through stronger performance management and guidance;
- Helping achieve delivery of further Government policy goals, including innovation, equality, and support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs);
- And driving forward the improvement of central Government capability in procurement, project and programme management, and estates management through the development of people skills, processes and tools.
OGC provides policy standards and guidance on best practice in procurement, projects and estate management, and monitors and challenges Departments' performance against these standards, grounded in an evidence base of information and assurance. It promotes and fosters collaborative procurement across the public sector to deliver better value for money and better public services; and it provides innovative ways to develop Government's commercial and procurement capability, including leadership of the Government Procurement Service.
Southern African Auditor and Training Certification Association (SAATCA)
SAATCA’s mission is to recognize and satisfy the needs of stakeholders in Southern Africa and provide confidence to industry by setting criteria in line with National and International Standards to ensure the competence of:
- Management System Auditors
- Management System Consultants and
- Management System Training course providers.
South African Bureau of Standards (SABS)
SABS is a statutory body that was established in terms of the South African Standards Act, 1945 (Act No. 24 of 1945) and continues to operate as South Africa's national institution for the promotion and maintenance of standardization and quality in connection with commodities and the rendering of services.
- SABS publishes national standards which it prepares through a consensus process in technical committees, provides information on national standards of all countries as well as international standards
- SABS tests and certifies products and services to standards
- SABS develops technical regulations (compulsory specifications) based on national standards, monitors and enforces compliance with such technical regulations
- SABS provides training on aspects of standardization.
The Open Group
The Open Group is a vendor-neutral and technology-neutral consortium, whose vision of Boundaryless Information Flow™ will enable access to integrated information, within and among enterprises, based on open standards and global interoperability. In accordance with its vision and mission, The Open Group works towards enabling access to integrated information within and between enterprises based on open standards and global interoperability. The Open Group, which also certifies professionals in the use of the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) for producing open architectures, launched the first independent, comprehensive IT Architect Certification program. The program defines global standards for measuring the skills and experience of IT architects and for the operation of IT architecture practices within enterprises.
